The Thirukkural (Sacred Couplet Verse) is one of the ancient
non-religious Tamil literature and scripture that guides human beings
(Society)and shows light on wisdom for better living in this universe. Though Tirukkural
(Divine Couplet Verse) is written over 2,000 years ago by Saint Thiruvalluvar
in Tamil (one of the oldest languages), the way of life advised in Tirukkural
is still relevant for today’s modern life and will be relevant for future
generations also. Thirukkural is praised as “the Universal Veda” and “ the
Universal Code of Conduct”.
Let us see how Thirukkural provides five 5 important functions of Management Lessons through various Thirukkural couplets / verses (kurals). Management is well explained in Kural 381.

Couplet in English:
An army, people, wealth, a minister, friends, fort: six things-
Who owns them all, a lion lives amid the kings. – Verse 381
Explanation in English : He who possesses these
six things, an army, a people, wealth, ministers, friends and a fortress, is a
lion among kings. In other words, An organization / Institution/ Government can
be called effective or powerful, when it possesses employees / teams (army,
people), finance (wealth), advisers / board of members (minister /councils),
alliances / suppliers (friends) and competitive advantage (forts). Management
is all about managing all these forces / elements to have effective
organization.

அழிக்கமுடியாத காவல் ஆறும் உடையதே அரசுகளில் சிங்கம் போன்றது.
Management is popularly referred in simple term as "the
art of getting things done through others".Management Thinkers like Henry
Fayol, Lyndall Urwick, Maynard and Barger, Luther Gullick and many other
Management Thinkers have Conceived different Functions of Management like Planning,
organizing, staffing, commanding, coordinating, controlling, communicating, forecasting,
investigating, executing, reviewing, reporting, budgeting, leading,
integrating, measuring and motivating…... Out of which the below are the 5
important functions of management which is needed to have effective and
efficient management of Organization or Government:

1. Planning :
Planning is a process of deciding in advance what is to be done, how, when and
by whom it is to be done. This is explained by Thirukkural in Verse 461&
465.

கலைஞர் மு.கருணாநிதி தமிழ் உரை: நன்றாகச் சிந்தித்த பிறகே செயலில் இறங்க வேண்டும்; இறங்கிய பிறகு சிந்திக்கலாம் என்பது தவறு. எந்த அளவுக்கு நன்மை கிடைக்கும்
அல்லது தீமை ஏற்படும் என்று விளைவுகளை சிந்தித்துப் பார்த்த பிறகே ஒரு செயலில் இறங்க
வேண்டும்.
சாலமன் பாப்பையா தமிழ் உரை: ஒரு செயலைச் செய்யும்போது வரும் நட்டத்தையும், பின் விளைவையும்
பார்த்து, அதற்குப்பின் வரும் லாபத்தையும் கணக்கிட்டுச் செய்க.ஒரு செயலைச்செய்து முடிக்கும் வழியை அறிந்து தொடங்குக. தொடங்கியபின் அது பற்றி எண்ணிக்கொள்வோம் என்பது குற்றம்.

Explanation in English: One way to promote the prosperity
of an enemy, is (for a king) to set out (to war) without having thoroughly
weighed his ability (to cope with its chances).
கலைஞர் மு.கருணாநிதி தமிழ் உரை: முன்னேற்பாடுகளை முழுமையாக ஆராய்ந்து செய்யாமல் பகைவரை ஒடுக்கமுனைவது அந்தப்பகைவரின் வலிமையை நிலையாக வளர்க்கும் வழியாக ஆகிவிடும்.
சாலமன் பாப்பையா தமிழ் உரை: முறையாகத் திட்டமிடாது ஒருசெயலைத் தொடங்குவது, வளரும் நிலத்திலே எதிர் அணியினரை நிலைபெறச் செய்யும் வழியாகும்.
2. Organizing: Establishing a structure of
authority for all work by identifying & grouping of activities for proper
delegation of responsibility and authority. This is explained by Thirukkural in
Verse 475 & 483.

கலைஞர் மு.கருணாநிதி தமிழ் உரை: மயில் இறகாக இருந்தாலும்கூட அதிகமாக ஏற்றப்பட்டால் வண்டியின் அச்சுமுறிகின்ற அளவுக்கு அதற்குப் பலம் வந்துவிடும்.
சாலமன் பாப்பையா தமிழ் உரை: மயில் தோகைதானே என்று அதை அளவுக்கு அதிகமாக வண்டியில் ஏற்றினால் வண்டியின் அச்சு முறிந்து போகும்.

Explanation in English: Is there anything difficult for him
to do, who acts, with (the right) instruments at the right time?.The leaders
who delegate the right job to the right people at right time will succeed in
Management.
கலைஞர் மு.கருணாநிதி தமிழ் உரை: தேவையான சாதனங்களுடன் உரிய நேரத்தையும் அறிந்து செயல்பட்டால் முடியாதவை என்று எவையுமே இல்லை.
சாலமன் பாப்பையா தமிழ் உரை: செயலைச் செய்து முடிப்பதற்கு ஏற்றதிறமைகளுடனும் தந்திரங்களுடனும், உரியகாலத்தைக் கண்டு ஒரு செயலைச் செய்தால் செய்வதற்கு அரிய செயல் என்று ஏதேனும் உண்டா?.
3. Staffing: Proper recruiting, hiring,
appraising and training staffs to maintain favorable working conditions in the
organization structure. This is explained by Thirukkural in Verse 518 &
512.

As each man's special aptitude is known,
Bid each man make that special work his own. – Verse 518
Explanation in English: Having considered what work a man
is fit for, let (the king) employ him in that work.
கலைஞர் மு.கருணாநிதி தமிழ் உரை: ஒருசெயலில் ஈ.டுபடுவதற்கு ஏற்றவனா என்பதை ஆராய்ந்து அறிந்தபிறகே, அவனை அந்தச்செயலில் ஈ.டுபடுத்தவேண்டும்.
சாலமன் பாப்பையா தமிழ் உரை: ஒருவனை ஒரு பதவிக்கு உரியவனாக நியமித்த பிறகு, அப்பதவிக்கு உரிய செயல்களை அவனே செய்யுமாறு விட்டுவிடுக.

Explanation in English: Let him do (the king's) work who
can enlarge the sources (of revenue), increase wealth and considerately prevent
the accidents (which would destroy it).
கலைஞர் மு.கருணாநிதி தமிழ் உரை: வருமானம் வரக்கூடிய வழிகளை விரிவாக்கி, வளங்களையும் பெருக்கி, இடையூறுகளையும் ஆராய்ந்து நீக்கிட வல்லவனே செயலாற்றும் திறனுடையவன்.
சாலமன் பாப்பையா தமிழ் உரை: பொருள்வரும் வழியை விரிவாக்கி, வந்த பொருளால் மேலும் செல்வத்தை வளர்த்து, அப்போது அதனாலும் வரும் இடையூறுகளை ஆராய்ந்து நீக்கக்கூடியவன் பணியாற்றுக.

Directing: Make decisions, leadership
qualities, monitoring accountability, issuing orders, motivation and
directives. This is explained by Thirukkural in Verse 466 & 472.

It’s ruin if man do an un-befitting thing;
Fit things to leave undone will equal ruin bring. – Verse 466
Explanation in English: He will perish who does not what is
not fit to do; and he also will perish who does not do what it is fit to do.
கலைஞர் மு.கருணாநிதி தமிழ் உரை: செய்யக் கூடாததைச் செய்வதால் கேடு ஏற்படும்; செய்ய வேண்டியதைச் செய்யாமல் விட்டாலும் கேடு ஏற்படும்.
சாலமன் பாப்பையா தமிழ் உரை: செய்யக் கூடாதவற்றைச் செய்தாலும் செய்ய வேண்டியவற்றைச் செய்யாமல் விட்டாலும்அழிவு வரும்.

Explanation in English: There is nothing which may not be
accomplished by those who, before they attack (an enemy), make themselves
acquainted with their own ability, and with whatever else is (needful) to be
known, and apply themselves wholly to their object.
கலைஞர் மு.கருணாநிதி தமிழ் உரை: ஒரு செயலில் ஈ.டுபடும் போது அச்செயலைப் பற்றிய அனைத்தையும் ஆராய்ந்தறிந்து முயற்சி மேற்கொண்டால் முடியாதது எதுவுமில்லை.
சாலமன் பாப்பையா தமிழ் உரை: தம்மால் செய்யமுடியும் செயலையும் அதைச் செய்வதற்கு ஏற்ற ஆற்றலையும் அறிந்து அதையே மனத்துள் சிந்தித்துச் செயலாற்றுவார்க்கு,
முடியாதது ஒன்றும் இல்லை.

Controlling: Controlling is the measuring
of current performance against pre-determined standards contained in the planning
or budgeting. Checking for any deviations or variations to take corrective
actions. This is explained by Thirukkural in Verse 434 & 435. குறள் பால்: பொருட்பால். குறள் இயல்: அரசியல். அதிகாரம்: குற்றங்கடிதல்.(The Correction of Faults)
குற்றமே காக்க பொருளாகக் குற்றமே
அற்றந் த்ரூஉம் பகை.- குறள் 434

English :
Freedom from faults is wealth; watch heedfully
against these, for fault is fatal enmity.– Verse 434
Explanation in English: Guard against faults as a matter
(of great consequence; for) faults are a deadly enemy.
கலைஞர் மு.கருணாநிதி தமிழ் உரை: குற்றம்புரிவது அழிவை உண்டாக்கக்கூடிய பகையாக மாறுவதால் குற்றம் புரியாமல் இருப்பது என்பதையே நோக்கமாகக் கொள்ள வேண்டும்.
சாலமன் பாப்பையா தமிழ் உரை: அரசிற்கு அழிவு தரும் பகை மனக் குற்றந்தான். அதனால் அக்குற்றம் தன்னிடம் வராமல் காப்பதையே பொருளாகக் கொள்ள வேண்டும்.

கலைஞர் மு.கருணாநிதி தமிழ் உரை: முன் கூட்டியே எச்சரிக்கையாக இருந்து ஒரு தவறான செயலைத் தவிர்த்துக் கொள்ளாதவருடைய வாழ்க்கையானது நெருப்பின் முன்னால் உள்ள வைக்கோல்போர் போலக் கருகிவிடும்.
சாலமன் பாப்பையா தமிழ் உரை: தனக்கு ஒரு குற்றம் வருவதற்கு முன்பே வராமல் காத்துக் கொள்ளாத அரசு, நெருப்பிற்கு முன் வைக்கப்பட்ட வைக்கோல் போல அழிந்து போகும்.
